Advances in Machine Tool Technology Lead to an Expanded Extension Tap Selection

Historically, the most common use of taps with longer than standard shank lengths was for threading pulleys. They were designed with shank diameters to be used as guides to ensure straight and accurate threads. Today, machine tools are used in various ways in a number of industries.

However, one major issue is that a number of machine tool production requirements for tapping surfaces are not readily accessible for standard length taps. Regal Cutting Tools saw this need and expanded the offering of “Regal Reach” extension taps to cover sizes from #4 to 1 ½” both in straight flute, spiral point and taper pipe sizes.

The desire for the efficient production of complex parts was accelerated during the development of machining centers for various applications in a number of sizes. With that evolution came the advance in fixtures commonly known as tombstones. These multi-dimensional upright stanchions have flexible holding mechanisms allowing for high production of machining various surfaces while not interfering with the holding of other parts. Extension taps provide the reach necessary to tap the required threads in surfaces not accessible with standard length taps.

Regal’s offering includes hand taps with standard shank diameters and sizes with smaller shanks which produce thread lengths deeper than the thread of the tap.  Spiral point taps for through hole threading are also available with small shanks for longer threading. Standard NPT and NPTF pipe tap sizes with extended length shanks make hard to reach taper threading easily achievable.

Regal stocks semi-finished extended length tap blanks so any length of pitch requirement can be made in 1 to 3 days. Surface coatings to customers’ needs can be handled efficiently  with quick direct shipment.
