Advantages of Regal’s New and Improved Drill’N’Tap

Regal’s new and improved Drill’N’Tap saves time without sacrificing hole precision or thread integrity. Not only do the tools drill and tap a hole in a single pass, but they also remove the need to switch between drills and taps. You don’t need to locate specialty-size drills or tap wrenches to switch out the tools.

Recommended Uses and Applications

Regal Drill’N’Taps have been redesigned for improved cutting action and equipped with a high-performance drill point with faceted relief points. The taps last longer than those manufactured by competitors thanks to a reduced-hook design that reinforces the cutting edge for superior strength. The tools’ gashing resembles an end mill, so drilling is more efficient, and wide, high-efficiency helical flutes evacuate chips quickly, allowing for faster speeds and less wear on the drill point.

Drill’N’Taps work best when creating through holes, and most common work materials, including malleable iron, steel, aluminum, and brass, up to twice the thread length. They are ideal for use on multiple-spindle drill heads with reversing mechanisms and for operations in a machining center. The drill section self-centers easily with a 118-degree helical point on smaller taps and a split-point on larger bits.

Specifications

Built from high-quality steel, these drill-and-tap bits are available in standard UNC and UNF sizes. Imperial (#4-3/4”) bits range from ¼- to 1¾-inch drill lengths. Metric drill-and-tap (M3-M12) drill sizes cover 9/32 to 1 1/8-inch. Pipe sizes from 1/16” to 1” are also standard. Thread lengths are 1/8-inch to ¼-inch longer than the drill length.

Since the drill and tap operations are conducted at the same time using the same tool, alignment will be perfect every time. And because the sizes are perfectly matched, each hole will obtain the ideal percent of thread with no manual calculation or guesswork involved. In addition to the standard sizes noted above, Regan can accommodate special orders for non-standard Drill’N’Taps and can add any tool coating desired.

Taper Pipe Drill’N’Taps

Regal has created a line of Drill’N’Taps for pipes requiring a tapered threaded hole. These pipe drill and tap tools incorporate a perfectly sized reamer to ensure the tap portion does not cut any material or engage threads until it penetrates the hole to the point where the tapers run parallel. At that point, all flute cutting edges engage the workpiece at the same time. The result is a tapered hole that matches the tap taper and will not leak under pressure.

The instantaneous rather than gradual flute engagement necessitates a tap that can withstand elevated initial torque and heat from high flank friction.
