Aircraft Industry Soars with Regal Drills

aircraft jobber drill

Regal Cutting Tools designs and manufactures aircraft drills to produce consistent, high-quality holes and exacting tolerances in aluminum, steel, titanium, alloys, and composites.  From hardworking jobber drills to extension bits for hard-to-reach applications to specialty drills for use on engines, wings, and other components too large or unwieldy to be drilled by screw machines, Regal has the engineering know-how to deliver the full line of drills that the aviation industry demands.

Jobber-Length Aircraft Drills

Regal’s jobber-length drills are the go-to option for many common aircraft manufacturing and repair jobs. Built of high-speed steel or cobalt steel, these bits are available in two point angles, a variety of finishes, and fractional, letter, and wire gauges, so you can choose the right combination of efficiency and wear resistance for your application:

Type A: Made of high-speed steel, 118-degree split points, and bright finish aids in chip removal and efficient drilling of mild steel, aluminum, and other softer materials.

Type B: Built with nitride and oxide coatings for excellent heat and wear resistance these bits are economical despite their high-speed steel construction and heavy-duty workloads. Designed to withstand the rigors of drilling titanium, stainless steel, and other hard work pieces, Regal’s type B bits are engineered with 135-degree points for fast starts and minimized walking.

Type D and Type J:  Regal’s cobalt bits stand up to the extreme temperatures generated when drilling hard, abrasive, high-strength alloys. While both include standard 135-degree points, the flutes on Type D bits extend only as far as those on screw machine bits, making them ideal for portable drilling applications. Type J bits have longer flutes, making them equally suited to portable and power drilling.

6-Inch Extension Aircraft Drills

Flexible enough to reach hidden and recessed work areas, Regal’s 6-inch extension aircraft drills feature jobber-length flutes for increased rigidity and resistance to buckling under strong torsional stress. Available in HSS for mild steels and cobalt for drilling stronger, high temperature alloys, their flute configuration and surface coatings prevent chip build-up for easier ejection. Regal also offers 12-inch extension drills to access the hardest-to-reach holes.

Special-Purpose Aircraft Drills

Aircraft manufacturing requires comprehensive assortment of specialty drills for counterboring, countersinking, maintaining, and repairing holes. Regal answers the call with specially designed bits customized to customer needs and drill motor manufacturers’ specifications:

Nutplate, Drivematic, and Spacematic Countersinks: Specially built for use in specific drill motors and on specific materials, these bits deliver consistent, precise hole placements, diameters, and countersink depths.

Core Drills: Large flutes permit higher feeds and speeds for fast, efficient material removal when enlarging, straightening, and truing existing holes.

Adapter Drills: Used to access awkward hole placements, Regal’s threaded-shank adapter bits can be used with a variety of angle and offset drills. The bits are short and feature a hex nut for easy insertion and removal when space is tight.
