To be ISO 9001 registered means that a company adheres to seven quality management principles and has an independent auditor verify, on a recurring schedule, that the processes and procedures to insure quality standards are maintained.

There are seven quality management principles:

1. Meet the customer requirements and strive to exceed the customer’s expectations.
2. Leaders within the company at all levels create conditions in which people are engaged in achieving the organizations quality objectives.
3. Recognition, empowerment and enhancement of competence facilitate the engagement of people in achieving the company’s quality objectives.
4. Understanding how inter-related processes are produced enables the organization to optimize its performance.
5. Focus on improvement ensures maintaining performance, and to be able to react to changes both internal and external to create new opportunities.
6. Decision making is a complex process involving some uncertainty.  Facts, evidence and data lead to improved operational effectiveness and efficiency.
7. Relationship management with suppliers and partners is of particular importance. A well managed supply chain provides a stable flow of material and services.

These principles are equal in importance and must be part of a company’s operational philosophy.
