Large Diameter Threading Taps: How Are They Made and How are They Repaired?

To produce large threading taps, precision ground high speed steel is purchased from American steel suppliers to the exact requirements of Regal Cutting Tools. By accounting for USCTI standards, we know the exact details of the shank size and overall length of the standard sizes needed.

Shank reduction of the large cylindrical rods is accomplished on huge machining centers. The flutes required for cutting are milled to our specifications on milling machines equipped to efficiently handle the weight and rotation of the parts. These semi-finished taps can be adapted in hours or days.

Our capacity has been expanded to include threaded taps to 8 inches in diameter both coarse and fine threads as well as special pitches and we can supply shell taps to fit given size arbors as well. With a single arbor multiple thread sizes can be produced.

Large Diameter Tap Repair Made Easy

The manufacturing process of threaded large holes has evolved to single or multiple points threading if the configuration of the part can be machined. Repair and maintenance work, however, is a completely different story. Often this is done by hand or other urgent methods.

When a customer recognizes the immediate need to repair a large mechanism, the luxury of waiting for a routine shipment of a large tap is long gone. Six months ago, we made two large diameter taps on a Sunday to ensure that a large nuclear power plant did not go inactive. A special courier waited until they were complete to drive the taps to the repair site.
