Spiral Point Taps Are the Perfect Through-Hole Solution
Specific thread and flute design often makes spiral point taps the best alternative for tapping through holes. Regal Cutting Tools builds its spiral points, or “gun taps,” to deliver precise shear cuts and hardy core sections that provide maximum bond strength. By setting the first few threads at an angle, spiral point taps push the cut chips ahead of the cutting action, rather than evacuating them up through the flutes. The straight, shallow flutes create superior shearing action in a variety of materials and greater girth for strength and rigidity.
Regal manufactures a full line of spiral point taps for virtually all common and specialty applications. Use this guide to determine the right ones for your shop.
Machine Screw Spiral Point Taps
Made with two or three flutes, these taps virtually eliminate chip loading. And because they are designed for through-holes and push the chips all the way through, there is no danger of backing the tap out over thread-damaging chips. They can be operated at higher speeds, thanks to a thread design that not only gives them larger cross-section diameters but also facilitates the flow and distribution of coolant to the cutting surfaces. Machine screw spiral point taps are available in decimal sizes 0.0470 to 0.2160.
Fractional Spiral Point Taps
Efficient and long-lasting, Regal’s fractional-size spiral point taps are the go-to choice for through holes in aluminum, steel, brass, and other common materials. Holes threaded with these free-cutting taps benefit from strong edge support and chip control thanks to consistently exact cutting angles on both the chamfer and flute face. Sizes up to ¾-inch are standard and always in stock, and Regal can manufacture special spiral taps up to 1 inch in as little as 24 hours.
Metric Spiral Point Taps
Built to the same exacting standards as our fractional taps, Regal’s general purpose metric spiral point taps are designed with both superior cutting action and solid construction to ensure long life. Sizes up to 20 millimeters are standard, and special larger spiral points up to 24 millimeters can be machined and shipped in 24 hours.
All of Regal’s spiral point taps can be coated with aluminum titanium nitride for added heat resistance and increased tap life. ALTiN gives taps a super-hard, smooth finish that resists chip adhesion while allowing high-speed production, even without coolant. Click here for our coated fractional and machine screw taps.
